Business Owners & Self-Employed Tax Filing

Running a business is hard enough, filing taxes shouldn’t be. I help small business owners, entrepreneurs, independent contractors, gig workers, and LLC owners stay compliant, maximize deductions, and avoid IRS issues while keeping more of their money in their business. This page gives you everything you need to know for the upcoming tax season.

Who this page is for

 This section applies to:

  • LLC owners (single-member or multi-member)

  • Sole proprietors

  • Independent contractors (1099-NEC)

  • Gig workers (Uber, Instacart, DoorDash, Amazon Flex, etc.)

  • Small business owners

  • Freelancers & home-based businesses

  • New business owners who need help for the first time

  • Rental or property income (if applicable)

  • Bank statements for business accounts

Business Expense Documentation

You should have receipts or records for:

  • Office supplies & equipment

  • Software or apps

  • Marketing & advertising

  • Business meals & travel

  • Rent (office, warehouse, home office %)

  • Utilities (home office %)

  • Phone & internet (business %)

  • Vehicle mileage logs or actual auto expenses

What Business Owners Need to Know for the 2025–2026 Tax Season

Add a description about this category

1099-K Rules Have Changed

The threshold is being lowered. Many platforms will now send 1099-K forms for payments over $600.
This includes:

  • Cash App

  • PayPal

  • Venmo

  • Etsy

  • eBay

  • Stripe

  • Shopify

If you get paid through apps, expect extra forms this year.

Mileage Deduction Increased

For 2025 filings, mileage is trending upward. Keeping a mileage log is more important than ever.

Home Office Deduction Is Still Allowed

If you run your business from home, you can claim:

  • Simplified deduction (flat rate), OR

  • Actual expenses (utilities, rent %, repairs, etc.)

Only rule: the space must be used regularly and exclusively for business.

New Business Equipment = Big Tax Savings

Section 179 and bonus depreciation may allow you to deduct:

  • Laptops

  • Printers

  • Cameras

  • Furniture

  • Software

  • Business vehicles

  • Machinery

This can dramatically reduce taxable income.

Estimated Taxes Are Required for Self-Employed

If you expect to owe over $1,000, the IRS requires quarterly estimated tax payments:

April 15

June 15

September 15

January 15

Even if you missed earlier quarters, I can calculate what you owe now.

More Scrutiny on Cash-Based Businesses

The IRS is increasing audits for:

  • Beauty services

  • Food vendors

  • Home cleaning

  • Handymen

  • Retail pop-ups

  • Daycare providers

Good bookkeeping protects you.
